‘Hacks’ Cast and Creators Say ‘Never Say Never’ to a Future Reboot

The hit HBO Max comedy series “Hacks” may not be saying goodbye for good just yet. In a recent interview with Variety, star Hannah Einbinder expressed her willingness to return for a potential reboot, stating, “Of course I would. Any excuse to be with my people.”

The show’s talented showrunners, Paul W. Downs, Lucia Aniello, and Jen Statsky, also hinted at the possibility of the story continuing in the future. While they mentioned feeling good about concluding the series on a high note, they didn’t rule out the idea of revisiting the beloved characters. “We would never say never,” the trio said. “We love these characters, we love this world, we love everybody in the ensemble. Right now we feel good about going out without overstaying our welcome — but you won’t have to twist my arm.”

The cast and creators of “Hacks” recently gathered to celebrate the upcoming fifth and final season of the show, which premieres on April 9. Jean Smart, Hannah Einbinder, Megan Stalter, Mark Indelicato, Rose Abdoo, Robby Hoffman, and the showrunning trio were all in attendance. The red carpet event showcased the strong bond between the cast and crew, indicating that nobody is quite ready to bid farewell to the series.

In addition to the potential reboot, the creators revealed that they have a new project in early development at HBO, although details are currently being kept under wraps. Jean Smart, who plays the iconic character Deborah Vance, reflected on the unique relationship between Deborah and Ava Daniels, played by Einbinder. She praised the writers for constantly raising the bar each season and described the upcoming season as her favorite.

For Einbinder, who began the show at just 24 years old, the emotional journey of the press tour has been profound. She expressed gratitude for the growth she experienced while working on the series, stating, “I feel like I grew up and became a human being on this show.” The dynamic between Deborah and Ava is a highlight for Einbinder, who enjoys the balance between their banter and camaraderie.

The ensemble cast also shared their thoughts on what they will miss most about the show. Megan Stalter, who plays Jimmy’s character, highlighted her partnership with Paul Downs as the aspect she will miss the most. Stalter also teased a secret project in the works, joking about undergoing plastic surgery and sharing the earnings with her castmates if a reboot happens.

Overall, the “Hacks” team expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work on the series and credited the show with reigniting their passion for the craft. The final season, consisting of 10 episodes, will air weekly leading up to the series finale on May 28.
