Fighting for health care claim approvals

Marketing executive Mathew Evins had been living with chronic back pain for eight long years. He described the pain as excruciating, and by 2024, it had become so severe that he struggled to even walk. After exhausting all non-invasive treatment options, his doctors agreed that surgery was necessary.

However, when Evins sought coverage from his insurance company, he was met with roadblocks. The company insisted on six more weeks of physical therapy before considering surgery. Despite his reluctance, Evins complied, enduring more pain-filled weeks only to have his insurance deny coverage once again. This pattern continued, with multiple denials over the course of seven months, causing his condition to deteriorate rapidly.

With 27 million Americans lacking health insurance altogether, Evins considered himself lucky to have coverage until he actually needed it. He believes that while insurance companies should have a say in coverage decisions, they should not have the final say.

A staggering 73 percent of Americans agree that healthcare delays and denials are a major problem. Author Katherine Hempstead, a senior policy officer at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, has witnessed countless stories of individuals being denied necessary treatments by their insurance companies. She emphasizes that while providers and insurance companies both play a role in the healthcare system, consumers often feel frustrated when insurance companies override medical recommendations.

Jeff Witten, co-founder of Sheer Health, reveals that one out of every five insurance claims is denied. This alarming statistic prompted him and Ben Howard to create a company dedicated to handling insurance battles on behalf of patients. By simply uploading a picture of their bill, clients can offload the burden of dealing with insurance companies to Sheer Health for a monthly fee or a percentage of any money recovered.

Despite the challenges he faced, Mathew Evins found relief through Sheer Health. The company meticulously reviewed his policy, submitted expedited appeals, and worked closely with his doctor to secure authorization for his much-needed surgery. Thanks to their efforts, Evins finally underwent surgery in mid-October and is now thriving.

While success stories like Evins’ highlight the importance of advocacy services like Sheer Health, Hempstead believes that such services are a band-aid solution to a broken healthcare system. She emphasizes the need for a comprehensive system that prioritizes patients’ well-being over bureaucratic hurdles.

In the end, Evins urges insurance companies to take their role in people’s lives seriously and not act as medical practitioners. The healthcare system must prioritize patients’ needs and ensure timely access to necessary treatments. With or without services like Sheer Health, a functional healthcare system is essential for the well-being of all individuals.
