Netflix Builds on Success of Series ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude’
Netflix Expands Presence in Latin America with Focus on Colombia
After successfully opening new offices in Mexico, Brazil, and Argentina earlier this year, Netflix is now setting its sights on Colombia. Francisco Ramos, Netflix’s VP of original content for Latin America, recently announced four key initiatives aimed at boosting the country’s audiovisual industry at the 65th Cartagena Film Festival (FICCI).
Ramos emphasized the importance of investing in Colombia’s creative industry to create a sustainable and competitive environment. He highlighted the need for not just financial support but also resources for artistic and technical craftsmanship to ensure quality productions. Netflix aims to provide tools and opportunities for local talent to excel in their own country without feeling the need to seek opportunities abroad.
In an exclusive interview with Variety, Ramos stressed the significance of developing the local talent pool to showcase Colombia’s cultural richness and diversity. He expressed the importance of nurturing talent in various areas such as production design, costume, makeup, VFX, cinematography, and production to create a well-rounded industry.
The four new training initiatives introduced by Netflix in Colombia include:
– Opera Prima Lab Film & Series: A program in partnership with FICCI that guides emerging filmmakers in developing their first feature films or series.
– Lab Macondo 3: Led by the Colombian Film Academy, this initiative focuses on executive production as a bridge between creative vision and project sustainability.
– Audiovisual Industry Provider Training Program: In partnership with ASOCINDE, this program aims to strengthen the capabilities of companies in developing and producing content.
– BAMMERS: Developed with Proimágenes Colombia, this initiative supports a new generation of Latin American producers by providing tools and connections for projects with international appeal.
These initiatives aim to provide access to international experts, share experiences, and connect participants with industry professionals to enhance skills and foster growth in the Colombian audiovisual industry.
Netflix’s investment in Colombia was exemplified by the production of “One Hundred Years of Solitude,” a groundbreaking series that not only held cultural significance but also had a substantial economic impact. Injecting nearly $60 million into the national economy, the production involved thousands of local talents and resources, showcasing Colombia’s potential as a hub for high-quality productions.
The 65th Cartagena Film Festival, where these initiatives were announced, runs from April 14-19, highlighting the ongoing efforts to strengthen Colombia’s position in the global entertainment industry.
