‘Massive’ Russian attack on Ukraine kills 16, injures at least 100, Ukrainian officials say
In a devastating turn of events, Ukraine found itself under attack by Russia, resulting in at least 16 fatalities and over 100 injuries. The onslaught included a barrage of almost 700 drones and 19 ballistic missiles, along with cruise missiles, launched by Russia. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy revealed that Ukraine managed to intercept and destroy around 636 drones and some of the missiles but unfortunately not all of them.
The attacks were widespread, with casualties reported in cities such as Odesa, Kyiv, and Dnipro. Tragically, among the deceased was a 12-year-old boy. President Zelenskyy expressed his condolences to the families and friends of the victims. The capital city of Kyiv bore the brunt of the missile strikes, causing significant damage to residential buildings. However, other regions across the country also witnessed destruction and loss of life.
The relentless assault prompted Zelenskyy to call for an unwavering response, emphasizing that Russia’s actions warranted no leniency or relaxation of sanctions. He stressed the need to defend lives using all available means and to exert maximum pressure to secure peace. The European Council president, Antonio Costa, condemned Russia’s deliberate targeting of civilians, labeling it as an act of terrorism. He reiterated the EU’s commitment to intensifying pressure on Moscow and advocating for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine based on international principles.
Meanwhile, Russian officials claimed that Ukraine retaliated by launching its own fleet of drones, resulting in over 200 drones being shot down by the Russian military. One Ukrainian drone reportedly struck a port on Russia’s Black Sea coast, causing damage to several coastal cities. The escalation of hostilities between the two nations underscored the urgent need for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
As the world watched in horror at the unfolding tragedy in Ukraine, the international community united in condemning the violence and urging both parties to prioritize dialogue and diplomacy. The harrowing events served as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of war on innocent civilians and the urgent need for a swift and peaceful resolution to the crisis.
