Third Street Promenade’s occupancy map tracks all store closures
A recent study conducted by a product designer in Santa Monica has shed light on a concerning trend that locals have been noticing for years – nearly 28.5% of storefronts on the Third Street Promenade are currently vacant. This interactive map created by the designer reveals the stark reality of a once-thriving shopping area that is now struggling with high vacancy rates. Unfortunately, the designer did not respond to interview requests from The Post.
Located just two blocks from the beach, the outdoor Santa Monica Mall has seen a decline in foot traffic due to factors such as online shopping and homelessness in the area.
The data revealed by The Post comes shortly after the announcement of the closure of The Misfit Bar and Restaurant, a popular establishment that has been in operation for 15 years within the historic Clock Tower building. To view the interactive map, click here.
Other closures in Santa Monica, such as The Britannia pub making way for a Taco Bell Cantina, have left locals disappointed. The decline in foot traffic and property-related issues were cited as reasons for these closures.
Major retailers abandoning the area have contributed to the decrease in foot traffic, once making the promenade a popular shopping destination in LA.

Efforts are being made by city officials to revitalize the Third Street Promenade, including expanding an outdoor Entertainment Zone and allocating funds for restaurant incentives and business recruitment. Additionally, a large music festival planned for September aims to attract thousands of attendees.
Despite these initiatives, the closure of numerous businesses has left locals disheartened, with one Redditor expressing sadness over the closure of The Misfit Bar and Restaurant, stating, “My fave bar in Santa Monica. Absolutely insane, there’s nothing left downtown.”
