Aussie traveler charged after wild LAX meltdown, allegedly attacks TSA agent over missing passport
A 35-year-old Australian man, Thomas Jesse Bingham, has pleaded not guilty to a federal charge after allegedly assaulting a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officer at Los Angeles International Airport. Bingham, from Melbourne, entered his plea in federal court in Los Angeles, facing a charge of assault on a federal officer resulting in bodily injury. If convicted, he could face up to eight years in prison, with a tentative trial date set for May 12.
The incident occurred on March 15 as Bingham was preparing to travel to Las Vegas. According to the US Department of Justice, Bingham believed a TSA officer had taken his backpack and passport, leading to a confrontation. Bingham approached the officer in a restroom and followed him out, where the situation escalated.
Prosecutors allege that Bingham grabbed the officer’s uniform, ripped off his identification lanyard, pulled his hair, and shoved him into a glass wall during the altercation. The officer reported pain in his hand and back and sought medical evaluation following the incident.
Airport police initially arrested Bingham, and his missing carry-on bag and passport were later located at a restaurant in Terminal 7 that he had visited earlier in the day. Bingham was released from custody but was apprehended again at LAX before boarding a flight to the United Kingdom.
The officer eventually regained control of the situation and held Bingham on the ground until airport police arrived. Authorities later confirmed that Bingham’s missing backpack and passport were found at the terminal restaurant he had visited earlier that day.
The case is ongoing, and Bingham will continue to face legal proceedings as the investigation unfolds. It serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining composure and following proper procedures when dealing with security personnel at airports to avoid potential conflicts and legal repercussions.
