NYPD cop racked up more than 500 speeding tickets in NYC since 2022: report

A shocking report has revealed that a NYPD cop from Staten Island has accumulated over 500 speeding tickets in the last four years, making him one of the most reckless drivers in New York City. Officer James Giovansanti, 33, has been caught on traffic cameras speeding through school zones or running red lights a staggering 187 times in the past year alone, according to Streetsblog.

Since 2022, Giovansanti has received a total of 547 tickets in Staten Island, with most of the violations occurring on the North Shore of the borough. The officer, who drives a Ram pickup truck, has been captured by cameras near Port Richmond High School running red lights 105 times. It is not clear how fast Giovansanti was driving when he committed these offenses, as most city streets have speed limits of 25 to 30 mph.

The fines for Giovansanti’s driving and parking violations range from $50 to $176.12, totaling $36,650.02 in fines. However, it is unknown whether he has paid the full amount. In comparison, the city’s top offender, an unnamed Brooklyn resident, has racked up $63,744.23 in fines for reckless driving.

According to the New York City Department of Transportation, drivers who receive two or more moving violation tickets annually are 40 times more likely to cause a crash resulting in death or serious injury. State Senator Andrew Gounardes commented on Giovansanti’s behavior, stating that the officer is exactly the type of “serial speeder” that his “Stop Super Speeders Act” aims to hold accountable. The act would involve placing speed limiters in cars of drivers who accumulate 16 or more speeding tickets in a year.

Gounardes emphasized that police officers are meant to protect and serve, not endanger their communities with reckless driving. He expressed disappointment in seeing an officer putting his neighbors at risk. The Post reached out to the NYPD for comment on the matter.
