Irvine police search for suspect in $3K Gelson’s wine theft
A recent incident in Irvine has left authorities seeking the public’s help in identifying a suspect who allegedly stole over $2,600 worth of high-end wine from a Gelson’s supermarket. The suspect, who was caught on surveillance footage, is described as a black man wearing a white long-sleeved dress shirt, dark slacks, brown shoes, and glasses at the time of the crime.
The Irvine Police Department took a humorous approach to the situation, jokingly stating, “You could say he took the phrase ‘grab life by the glass’ a little too seriously. At those prices, that’s not just a bad pour decision, it’s a full-bodied felony.” The department has released video images of the suspect and is urging anyone who recognizes him to come forward.
Under California Penal Code 487, theft of property valued above $950 qualifies as grand theft. With the stolen wine exceeding $2,600, the charge falls into “wobbler” territory, meaning it can be prosecuted as either a misdemeanor or a felony. If charged as a felony, the suspect could face 16 months to three years behind bars, fines up to $10,000, mandatory restitution to Gelson’s, and a potential restraining order barring entry to Gelson’s locations for up to two years. If treated as a misdemeanor, the maximum penalty would be up to one year in county jail.
The history of wine spans over 8,000 years, making it a cherished and valuable commodity. Authorities are urging anyone with information about the suspect to contact Detective Drake at JDrake@cityofirvine.org to help bring closure to this case. Remember, if you recognize him, don’t bottle it up – let the authorities know so they can put a cork in this case.
