‘Fargo’ Creator Noah Hawley Calls YouTube His Biggest Competition

Noah Hawley, the creative mind behind hit TV series such as “Fargo,” “Legion,” and “Alien: Earth,” is staying optimistic about the entertainment industry despite the challenges it faces. Speaking at Canneseries, he acknowledged that it has been a journey to maintain his optimism in an industry that is constantly evolving.

Hawley pointed out the impact that tech companies have had on Hollywood, flooding it with money and causing shifts in the traditional model of content creation. Despite the competition from platforms like YouTube, which offer free content, he believes that there are still opportunities to create masterpieces that resonate with audiences.

As a former novelist turned TV writer, Hawley sees television as a powerful medium for reaching and engaging with audiences. He believes that if you have something important to say, TV is the best way to communicate it to the culture at large.

Known for his ability to breathe new life into existing franchises, Hawley has been dubbed “the franchise whisperer.” He takes established brands like “Fargo” and “Alien” and tells original stories within those worlds, evoking the emotions and themes of the originals while offering fresh perspectives.

In “Legion,” a show set in the X-Men universe, Hawley explores complex themes of mental illness and identity through the character of Professor X’s son. By reinterpreting familiar elements in unfamiliar ways, he creates a unique and compelling narrative that resonates with audiences.

Despite the challenges of adapting existing properties, Hawley approaches each project with a fresh perspective, focusing on the emotions and themes that made the original works resonate with audiences. He doesn’t rewatch the originals before starting a new project, instead relying on his memories and emotions to guide his storytelling.

As he looks ahead to the future, Hawley remains committed to creating compelling and original content that challenges and engages audiences. With new seasons of “Fargo” and “Legion” on the horizon, fans can look forward to more thought-provoking and emotionally resonant storytelling from one of television’s most innovative creators.

Reimagining Iconic Stories with a Focus on Women

When it comes to reinterpreting familiar brands, the foremost priority for the creator is authenticity.

“It’s crucial to truly grasp the essence of a franchise like ‘Alien.’ Once that understanding is achieved, the goal is to bring something new to the table. I don’t view it as mere ‘fan service.’ It’s about ensuring that the narrative stands strong on its own merits.”

For his take on “Alien,” he introduced what he calls “the Peter Pan metaphor.”

“This story delves into the concept of humanity caught between the perils of our past and the uncertainties of our future, such as the rise of AI, which mirrors our present-day world.”

Has artificial intelligence (AI) been utilized in his work so far?

“Not yet, but discussions have taken place. With significant budgets involved in producing a season of ‘Alien,’ there’s a growing interest in cost-saving measures. While I’m open to exploring how AI can enhance storytelling, it should never replace the creative touch of human storytellers.”

He elaborated: “I penned a novel featuring a plane crash and underwater sequences, which are inherently expensive to bring to life on screen. However, at its core, the narrative revolves around human emotions and relationships. If AI were to handle all the grandiose elements, would the film still retain its essence? The idea of using AI to complete unfinished projects, like Kubrick’s ‘Napoleon,’ may be inevitable. I prefer to be proactive in finding solutions rather than letting circumstances dictate the outcome.”
