Hundreds of Google workers urge CEO to refuse classified AI work with Pentagon
Google employees are taking a stand against the company’s potential collaboration with the Pentagon, urging CEO Sundar Pichai to refrain from providing artificial intelligence tools for classified military use. In an open letter addressed to Pichai, employees expressed concerns about Google’s ongoing negotiations with the U.S. Department of Defense, stating that the technology is not suitable for classified workloads.
The employees emphasized their responsibility to prevent the unethical and dangerous use of AI systems, urging Pichai to reject making these tools available for classified military applications. They highlighted the potential for Google’s AI systems to be used in inhumane or harmful ways, such as lethal autonomous weapons and mass surveillance.
According to reports from The Information, Google is in discussions with the Defense Department regarding a possible deal to deploy its AI in classified work. This comes after OpenAI made an agreement with the Pentagon, ensuring that its technology would not be used for mass domestic surveillance or to control autonomous weapons systems.
The employees warned that making the wrong decision could have severe consequences for Google’s reputation, business, and global standing. They emphasized the need to prioritize ethical considerations when it comes to the use of AI in military settings.
Neither Google nor the Pentagon has responded to requests for comment on the employees’ letter. However, the employees remain steadfast in their belief that AI should not be used for classified military purposes. As the debate over the ethical implications of AI continues, it remains to be seen how Google will navigate its relationship with the Pentagon and the potential deployment of its AI technology in classified settings.
