Nepali Drama ‘Shakti’ Sets Prime Video Debut in U.S. and U.K.

Filmmaker Nani Sahra Walker is set to release her debut narrative feature, “Shakti,” on Prime Video in the U.S. and U.K. on May 22. The film tells the story of a mother in Kathmandu who must protect her daughter from a sudden and troubling change, leading both characters to confront trauma and a legal system that struggles to deliver justice. The film highlights Nepal’s time limits on prosecuting sexual violence, shedding light on the need for legislative accountability.

Walker, known for her documentary “Other Nature” and the Academy Award-winning short “The Last Repair Shop,” has received critical acclaim for “Shakti.” The film has won awards at prestigious international film festivals such as the Heartland International Film Festival, the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, and the International Film Festival of India.

Before its digital release, “Shakti” will be showcased at the 44th CAAMFest in the San Francisco Bay Area on May 10. Walker expressed that the film has sparked important conversations about power dynamics in society, particularly among younger audiences. She emphasized the importance of addressing uncomfortable truths in order to bring about meaningful change.

The cast of “Shakti” includes talented actors such as Laxmi Bardewa, Menuka Pradhan, and Shristi Shrestha. The project was financed by Snehal Fulzele and Vrushali Satarkar, with support from the Gerbode Foundation and the ARRI International Support Program. The film’s score, composed by William Ryan Fritch, features a track by Nepali rapper Dmriti and contributions from musician Shyam Nepali.

Fulzele and Satarkar, both Dalit entrepreneurs, shared that supporting “Shakti” was a personal and impactful decision for them. They believe that the authenticity of the film has the power to challenge perspectives and inspire change.
