Escaped felon used fake drug-swallowing claim (again) to get to hospital before killing officer, prosecutors allege

Chicago Cop Killed in Hospital Shooting by Alleged Repeat Offender

Alphonso Talley, a 26-year-old seven-time felon, was arrested by Chicago cops for allegedly robbing a Family Dollar store in Albany Park and attacking the store’s cashier on Saturday morning. Talley, known for his history of deceit and manipulation, claimed he had swallowed baggies of drugs to avoid being taken to a police lockup. However, what transpired next was a tragic turn of events that shook the Chicago Police Department to its core.

As Talley was being guarded at Swedish Hospital for a CT scan, he seized the opportunity to pull out a concealed handgun, fatally shooting Officer John Bartholomew in the head. Another officer, Bartholomew’s partner, was also shot in the face and is currently fighting for his life. Talley then made a daring escape by shooting through a hospital window, fleeing into the nearby Lincoln Square neighborhood completely naked. After a brief manhunt, officers apprehended him hiding in a residential area and recovered the murder weapon.

It was later revealed that a suburban woman had purchased the firearm used in the shooting, falsely claiming on paperwork that she did not use illegal drugs and would be the gun’s final owner. She confessed to federal agents that her then-boyfriend, a convicted felon, had given her money to buy the gun. Although no direct link was established between the woman and Talley, the incident highlighted the dangers of illegal firearms falling into the wrong hands.

Talley, who had previously escaped electronic monitoring while on pretrial release for armed carjacking and armed robbery, faces a litany of charges including first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and various other serious offenses. Chicago Police Department Superintendent Larry Snelling condemned the shootings as a tragic reminder of the risks faced by officers daily and called for justice for the fallen officer and support for his injured colleague.

As the community mourns the loss of Officer Bartholomew and prays for the recovery of his wounded partner, the city grapples with the harsh realities of crime and violence that continue to plague its streets. The call for accountability and justice echoes loudly in the aftermath of this senseless act of violence.
