Man takes sister’s exhumed body to bank in bid to get to her money, bank says

New Delhi Man Carries Sister’s Body to Bank to Prove Death

An unusual incident took place in New Delhi when Jitu Munda, a member of a tribal community in Odisha, brought his deceased sister’s body to an Indian Overseas Bank branch. His intention was to prove that his sister was indeed dead after being denied access to her account without a death certificate.

On Monday, Munda visited the bank to withdraw money from his sister’s account, only to be informed that withdrawals by a third party were not allowed without proper authorization. Frustrated by the bank’s refusal due to the lack of a death certificate, Munda returned to the branch with the “human remains” of his sister, who had been buried a few days earlier.

The shocking sight of Munda carrying what appeared to be a partially wrapped corpse caused a commotion at the bank premises. The incident was attributed to a “lack of awareness” and the individual’s refusal to follow standard procedures, according to the bank.

The bank assured that the claim would be processed promptly once the required death certificate was submitted. In India, the registration of births and deaths is mandatory, but issues with documentation often arise, especially in rural areas, leading to difficulties in obtaining formal certificates.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of proper documentation and adherence to protocols when dealing with sensitive matters such as accessing deceased individuals’ accounts. It also highlights the challenges faced by many families in obtaining essential documents in rural areas.
