ITV Sets Terry Butcher Documentary ‘Invisible Wounds’ on Former Captain

ITV to Release Feature Documentary on Terry Butcher

ITV has announced the commissioning of a new feature documentary on former England captain, Terry Butcher. Produced by Sylver Entertainment, known for their work on “McEnroe,” the film titled “Terry Butcher: Invisible Wounds” will delve into Butcher’s life both on and off the pitch. Directed by Stuart Burley, this documentary promises to be a poignant exploration of Butcher’s journey from triumph to tragedy.

Butcher, a legendary figure in English football, captained the national team 77 times and achieved success with Ipswich Town in Europe. However, his personal life took a devastating turn with the loss of his son, Chris, a British Army veteran who struggled with severe PTSD. The documentary will shed light on Butcher’s struggles with grief, his recovery process, and his involvement with Combat2Coffee, a peer-support organization.

Reflecting on his experiences, Butcher shared, “I wore the Three Lions shirt with pride, but nothing could have prepared me for losing Chris. This film is about honoring his life and our journey. If it can offer solace to even one person, then it has served its purpose.”

Director Stuart Burley expressed his admiration for Butcher’s resilience, stating, “Terry Butcher’s story transcends football. It’s a narrative of courage, grief, and hope. The strength he has shown in sharing his story is truly inspiring. While the wounds may never fully heal, Terry’s newfound purpose is a testament to his unwavering courage.”

The documentary, produced by John Grint, is scheduled for a theatrical release in the U.K. in May, followed by screenings across different regions. It will later air on ITV and ITVX in June, coinciding with England’s World Cup campaign. Executive producers Victoria Barrell and Simon Lazenby from Sylver Entertainment are thrilled to bring Butcher’s story to a wider audience.

ITV Sport’s assistant commissioner, Richard Botchway, emphasized the importance of Butcher’s story in highlighting themes of resilience and vulnerability. He stated, “Terry Butcher’s openness about his grief and trauma is a testament to his courage. As football unites the nation, this documentary sparks a deeper conversation that ITV is proud to showcase.”

Victoria Barrell echoed this sentiment, expressing pride in sharing Butcher’s human story with audiences. She emphasized the documentary’s relevance in today’s context, where themes of loss and resilience resonate deeply.

With its compelling narrative and heartfelt portrayal of Butcher’s journey, “Terry Butcher: Invisible Wounds” promises to be a moving tribute to a sporting legend’s personal struggles and triumphs.
