Top-seeded UCLA men’s volleyball falls to UC Irvine in massive upset
The UCLA men’s volleyball team experienced a rollercoaster of emotions in a matter of moments during their NCAA Tournament quarterfinal against UC Irvine. What seemed like a sure victory for the Bruins quickly turned into a heartbreaking defeat, as a crucial point was overturned after an official review.
The top-seeded UCLA team, with a record of 29-2, had been dominant throughout the season, with their only previous loss coming against Pepperdine. The unexpected loss to UC Irvine, a team they had defeated earlier in the season, left the players stunned and reeling from the sudden turn of events.
The match came down to a thrilling fifth set, with the Anteaters staging a comeback after trailing 8-4. A controversial call that awarded a match point to UCLA was reversed, giving UC Irvine new life and ultimately leading to their victory.
Despite the disappointment, the Bruins showed resilience in the face of defeat. Senior setter Andrew Rowan emphasized the team’s determination to move on from the overturned call and focus on bouncing back from the setback.
For the Anteaters, the win was a testament to their belief and perseverance. Coach David Kniffin’s confidence in his team and their ability to sustain belief proved crucial in their triumph over the heavily favored Bruins.
The loss marked the end of an era for UCLA’s seniors, who had experienced championship success in the past but fell short in their final collegiate season. Coach John Hawks expressed sadness for the seniors and acknowledged the incredible run the team had experienced leading up to the disappointing defeat.
As UC Irvine advances to the Final Four to face off against Ball State, the Bruins are left to reflect on what could have been. The unexpected loss serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of sports and the importance of staying focused and resilient in the face of adversity.
