Mississippi gunmaker Walter Earnest Birdsong Jr, wife shot dead by relative Kurt Birdsong in murder-suicide over land dispute: cops

A tragic incident unfolded in Mississippi when a gunmaker and his wife were shot dead by a relative over a land dispute before he took his own life. The victims were identified as Walter Earnest Birdsong Jr., 62, and his wife, Amanda Lynn Birdsong, 43, who were killed by Kurt Birdsong inside their Florence home. The shooting was reportedly sparked by a long-standing dispute over a piece of land that Kurt claimed he was promised by his late father.

Kurt, armed with multiple guns, entered the Birdsong’s home and fatally shot Walter and Amanda before barricading himself in a bathroom. After a three-hour standoff, Kurt was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Despite efforts from law enforcement and hostage negotiators to convince Kurt to surrender, the situation ended in tragedy.

Walter was the son of the founder of W.E. Birdsong & Associates, a firearms business, which prompted a request for bomb squad assistance due to concerns about explosive materials on the property. Police forcibly entered the home and discovered Kurt’s body in the bathroom.

The feud between Kurt and the Birdsong family had been ongoing for at least seven years, with previous legal disputes over land ownership. In 2019, Kurt claimed that a 14-acre piece of land had been transferred to a third party without his consent, leading to a court battle that ruled against him due to the absence of a written contract. Following the court decision, Kurt’s behavior reportedly became more erratic, with neighbors recalling disturbances and arguments within the family.

Amanda Birdsong was known for her efforts to mediate disputes within the family, with neighbors describing her as a peacemaker who tried to facilitate conversations and resolve conflicts. The Birdsong family expressed profound grief over the tragic events, acknowledging the loss of all three individuals involved in the incident.

Investigators are now examining Kurt’s cellphone for any potential manifesto or evidence related to the shooting. The community is left reeling from the devastating loss as they grapple with the aftermath of the double murder-suicide that has torn apart a family over a disputed piece of land.
