Ebay targeted by Pro-Iran hacking group

San Jose-based eBay faced a severe cyberattack orchestrated by a pro-Iran hacking group known as the “Islamic Cyber Resistance in Iraq – 313 Team.” The attack caused significant disruptions, leaving eBay users unable to browse listings, make purchases, or complete transactions for nearly two days last month.

Cybersecurity experts identified the attack as a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) assault, where hackers overwhelm a company’s servers with fake traffic, causing system failures.

The hackers used rapid-fire attacks to keep eBay’s infrastructure under constant strain and issued threats to other major tech companies. The attack reportedly cost eBay up to $200 million per day in disrupted transactions as services gradually returned online.

Following the eBay attack, the same group targeted Spotify, causing widespread outages and disabling the application. The hackers claimed responsibility for disrupting Spotify’s main servers and vowed to continue targeting major corporations.

The hacking group also claimed attempted attacks on WordPress and Goodreads, in addition to previous disruptions targeting Microsoft, Amazon, Dropbox, and X.

Overall, the cyberattacks orchestrated by the “Islamic Cyber Resistance in Iraq – 313 Team” have raised concerns about the vulnerability of major tech companies to such malicious activities.
