What is a perpetual DEX? A Wall Street primer featuring Decibel
Financial markets are experiencing a significant shift away from the traditional opening bell. While stock exchanges adhere to fixed trading hours, the crypto markets operate continuously, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This evolution is reshaping how exchanges, trading infrastructure, and investors approach market access.
In a recent interview with TheStreet Roundtable’s Alp Gasimov, Brylee Whatley from Decibel Foundation discussed the growing importance of perpetual decentralized exchanges (DEXs) in this changing landscape. Whatley emphasized that as more exchanges and alternative trading systems (ATSs) explore extended market hours, perpetual DEXs are poised to play a crucial role in this evolution.
For traditional investors, perpetual futures may seem like just another trading product. However, Whatley pointed out that the real significance lies in the underlying infrastructure. These markets are designed to operate continuously, settle instantly, and function without the need for traditional intermediaries.
The traditional financial markets have always relied on downtime for trade reconciliation, transaction settlement, and risk management. The emergence of crypto markets has disrupted this model by demanding more resilient trading systems capable of handling round-the-clock global activity.
Decentralized finance (DeFi) has emerged as a solution to this always-on market environment. Whatley highlighted that perpetual DEXs are specifically designed to thrive in this continuous trading landscape.
So, what exactly is a perpetual DEX? At its core, a perpetual decentralized exchange allows traders to buy and sell perpetual futures contracts directly onchain. These contracts do not expire, unlike traditional futures contracts, and instead use funding rates to maintain price alignment with the underlying market.
Decibel, the exchange Whatley represents, is built on Aptos, a blockchain known for its low latency and high transaction throughput. This emphasis on fast execution speeds is crucial for institutional-grade trading infrastructure, allowing for more efficient onchain activity.
Decibel positions itself as the execution layer on top of this high-speed infrastructure, enabling traders to access a wide range of assets through perpetual markets. Currently offering crypto-native assets and commodities like gold and silver, Decibel has plans to expand its offerings to include equities, indexes, and other real-world assets.
As investor behavior continues to shift towards continuous participation, perpetual DEXs may become a foundational element of the broader financial infrastructure. This transition is already underway for traditional investors, signaling a new era of 24-7 investing.
