Bessent says U.S. leads, safety protocol planned

In a recent interview with CNBC, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent emphasized that the United States is leading the way in artificial intelligence (AI), allowing for productive discussions with China on the topic. Bessent highlighted the importance of establishing a protocol for best practices in AI to prevent nonstate actors from exploiting the technology.

The conversation around AI has been fueled by the emergence of Anthropic’s Mythos AI model, which has raised concerns due to its potential cyberattack capabilities. Despite these apprehensions, Bessent remains optimistic about the dialogue between the U.S. and China, citing America’s position as a frontrunner in AI development.

Bessent also mentioned upcoming advancements in AI, particularly in language models from Google’s Gemini and OpenAI. Additionally, efforts to regulate China’s AI progress include restrictions on advanced semiconductor sales, with Nvidia playing a key role in this strategy. The recent clearance of Nvidia’s H200 AI chips for sale to Chinese tech firms has sparked debate within the U.S. government.

Following President Donald Trump’s meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, tensions surrounding Taiwan were a focal point. Xi emphasized the importance of Taiwan as a bilateral issue, cautioning against mishandling the sensitive topic. Bessent hinted at Trump addressing the Taiwan issue in the near future, emphasizing the president’s understanding of diplomatic nuances.

Bessent’s involvement in the Asia trip reflects the administration’s commitment to addressing trade issues with China. Preceding the Trump-Xi summit, Bessent engaged in preliminary discussions with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng in South Korea. The meetings aimed to enhance economic and trade relations between the two nations.

As the dialogue between the U.S. and China continues to evolve, Bessent remains optimistic about the potential for collaboration on AI and other critical issues. The ongoing exchanges between the two superpowers underscore the importance of establishing clear guidelines for the responsible development and deployment of AI technology.
