Everybody on Wall Street is ridiculing Ryan Cohen’s $56B eBay bid — but I’m not so sure

Many traders and investors doubt that GameStop’s CEO, Ryan Cohen, will actually acquire eBay. However, despite the skepticism, Cohen’s potential bid for eBay is not to be underestimated.

While there are valid reasons to question the feasibility of such a deal, including eBay being five times larger than GameStop and the limited reach of Cohen’s investor following, there is still a sense of intrigue surrounding his intentions.

Cohen’s handling of the situation, particularly his vague responses about financing the deal, has raised eyebrows. His comments on CNBC did little to instill confidence, with his claim that all details are on the website not adding up to the required funds for the acquisition.

Despite eBay’s strong performance under current management and its rejection of Cohen’s offer as “neither credible nor attractive,” Cohen seems determined to explore all avenues, including potentially diluting GameStop shareholders to bridge the financing gap.

GameStop, a struggling business that Cohen took over in 2023, has seen operational improvements under his leadership. While the stock remains tied to meme mania, the company’s balance sheet has strengthened, with a $10 billion market cap.

Despite the skepticism surrounding Cohen’s pursuits, there is a sense that he has a strategic plan in mind, whether it involves eBay or another opportunity in the future.

Bob Sloan, a seasoned Wall Street figure, sees potential in Cohen’s actions, suggesting that there is a method to the perceived madness in his bid for eBay.

While Cohen faces challenges, including the possibility of a hostile bid for eBay, his track record with GameStop has shown that unconventional moves can sometimes yield unexpected results.
