New data reveals 100% chance of strong ‘Super’ El Nino forming this year

The latest long-range European forecast has revealed a 100% chance of a super El Niño event, which could have significant impacts on weather patterns in the near future. The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) has issued their May long-range forecast model, indicating a heightened likelihood of the strongest El Niño ever recorded by November. This early prediction of a powerful El Niño event suggests that it could be a notable weather phenomenon that will be remembered for years to come.

Typically, a strong El Niño event like this one would result in suppressed hurricane activity in the Atlantic and increased activity in the Eastern Pacific. However, despite the forecast for a super El Niño, the ECMWF has not yet shown a significant decrease in the number of hurricanes expected for the season. This suggests that the full effects of the strongest El Niño may not be felt until later in the season. The current forecast predicts 13 named storms and 6 hurricanes, slightly below the season average of 14 named storms and 7 hurricanes.

In terms of precipitation and temperature, the forecast indicates above-average rainfall in the southern U.S., particularly in the northern Gulf region. Additionally, Atlantic water temperatures are projected to be above average for most of the season. While the forecast suggests below-average tropical activity in the Atlantic Main Development Region, it does not completely rule out the possibility of some tropical activity in the region.

Hurricane season in the Eastern Pacific is set to begin on May 15, followed by the Atlantic hurricane season on June 1. The extended forecast indicates above-average rainfall across the southern U.S., which could provide relief for areas experiencing drought conditions, particularly in the Southeast. Overall, the upcoming months are expected to bring wetter conditions and potentially suppress hurricane activity in the Atlantic, while increasing activity in the Eastern Pacific.

As we prepare for the impacts of the super El Niño event, it is essential for communities and authorities to stay informed and take necessary precautions to mitigate potential risks and ensure the safety of residents. Stay tuned for further updates on weather patterns and forecasts as the season progresses.
