The 3:00 PM Tradition: Joining the National Moment of Remembrance

Memorial Day often feels like the unofficial kickoff to summer: a weekend filled with backyard BBQs, pool openings, and retail sales. But amidst the festivities, there is a powerful, quiet tradition that calls us back to the heart of the holiday.

Why 3:00 PM?

In 2000, Congress passed the National Moment of Remembrance Act, establishing 3:00 PM local time as a minute of silence across the United States.

The time wasn’t chosen at random. At 3:00 PM, most of us are in the thick of our holiday celebrations. By pausing at this specific moment, we make a conscious choice to put “the memorial back in Memorial Day.” It is a brief, unifying act that connects us all in gratitude for the service members who gave everything for our freedom.

A Moment for Reflection

Whether you are at a ballgame, on the road, or flipping burgers, this one-minute pause is a simple way to honor our fallen heroes. It’s an opportunity to teach the younger generation about the cost of our liberty and to ensure the names of those we’ve lost are never forgotten.
