Eagles’ Nolan Smith Jr. arrested for driving nearly double the speed limit in Georgia
Philadelphia Eagles edge rusher Nolan Smith Jr. found himself in hot water last week when he was arrested in Georgia for speeding and reckless driving. The incident occurred on the night of May 15, when Smith was caught driving at a staggering speed of 135 mph in a 70 mph zone, as reported by the Twiggs County Sheriff’s Office.
Despite the serious nature of the charges, Smith was able to post bond and was released from custody within an hour of his arrest. The talented player, who hails from Savannah, Georgia, was a first-round pick for the Eagles in the 2023 NFL draft. Throughout his three seasons with the team, Smith has proven himself to be a formidable force on the field, with impressive stats including 25 quarterback hits, 10.5 sacks, 10 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries.
Smith’s standout performance was during the Eagles’ Super Bowl LIX run, where he played a crucial role in securing victory against the Kansas City Chiefs. Despite sustaining a torn triceps that required surgery, Smith refused to exit the game and went on to record five quarterback hits, four sacks, and four tackles for loss during the playoffs.
As the Eagles gear up for organized team activities, Smith is facing a court date scheduled for July 15. However, a representative from the sheriff’s office mentioned that he may not need to appear in court if he pays his fines promptly. The Eagles have yet to comment on the situation.
Unfortunately, Smith is not the only Georgia player to have faced legal troubles related to driving offenses. His teammate, Jalen Carter, was previously given probation and a fine after being involved in a crash that resulted in the death of Bulldogs offensive lineman Devin Willock and recruiting staffer Chandler LeCroy.
