Another pet supplies store operator files Chapter 11 bankruptcy
Pet Supplies Plus franchisee, IKPM Pet Supply LLC, has recently filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, highlighting the economic challenges faced by pet supplies retail operators. Despite the overall growth in the pet industry, driven by a 3.7% increase in sales in 2025, rising labor and product costs due to inflation have put financial strain on some businesses.
According to the American Pet Products Association’s 2026 State of the Industry Report, sales in the pet industry are projected to reach $165 billion in 2026, with a 4.4% full-year growth expected, partly driven by inflation. However, not all pet supplies retailers are reaping the benefits of this growth, as evidenced by the bankruptcy filings of IKPM Pet Supply LLC and PSP TS LLC.
IKPM Pet Supply LLC, based in Sugar Land, Texas, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in May, listing assets between $100,000 to $500,000 and liabilities ranging from $1 million to $10 million. The largest creditors include Customers Bank, Ondeck, Karthikeyan Patchamuthu, Chase, and Petronia Holdings.
Similarly, PSP TS LLC, a Pet Supplies Plus franchisee in Holiday, Florida, also filed for bankruptcy protection in May, with assets and liabilities in the same range as IKPM Pet Supply LLC. Both franchisees have not specified the reasons for their bankruptcy filings, and their stores remain open for business.
Pet Supplies Plus, headquartered in Livonia, Michigan, operates 725 locations across 44 states and offers a wide range of pet products from over 400 brands. The chain also provides online shopping with same-day delivery and one-hour curbside pickup for customer convenience.
The recent bankruptcy filings by Pet Supplies Plus franchisees serve as a reminder of the ongoing economic challenges faced by retail operators, despite the overall growth in the pet industry. It is essential for businesses to adapt to changing market conditions and financial pressures to ensure long-term success in the competitive retail landscape.
