6 hauled off in cuffs as Knicks diehards celebrate outside NYC’s Madison Square Garden after historic playoff sweep
The streets outside Madison Square Garden were a scene of chaos and celebration as the New York Knicks clinched the NBA finals for the first time in 27 years. Six individuals were taken into custody for disorderly conduct as they partied like it was 1999 outside The Mecca on Monday night. The rowdy crowd climbed on light posts, blocked cars, and jumped over police barriers, prompting law enforcement to intervene.
Despite the jubilant atmosphere, the NYPD issued summonses to the disruptive fans and processed them at the Midtown South Precinct. Videos from the scene captured the wild antics, including one young reveler being handcuffed after climbing a light pole. The crowd erupted into chants of “Let him free!” and “Boo!” as the situation escalated.
Another video showed fans standing on the iconic arena’s marquee, with one bystander warning, “You’re going to jail.” Despite the chaos, one fan expressed his elation at the Knicks’ historic victory, exclaiming, “This is amazing! I waited years for this. I love Jalen Brunson,” in reference to the series MVP.
The celebration outside MSG occurred despite the NYPD canceling the venue’s outdoor watch party for the playoff game due to unruly behavior by fans. Permits for the event were denied, and police refused to support additional watch parties outside the stadium following a string of issues during previous games.
Instead, fans gathered outside Radio City Music Hall for a watch party that remained under control, with no arrests reported. The NYPD emphasized their commitment to reviewing requests for alternate party locations, such as Summer Stage in Central Park, to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all Knicks fans.
