Texas Senate runoff tests Trump’s influence

The Senate race in Texas has captured the attention of voters, as they headed to the polls to decide the Republican nominee in a pivotal election that could determine control of the Senate. This race also serves as a test of President Donald Trump’s influence in the state.

One of the key matchups in this election is between Attorney General Ken Paxton and incumbent Republican Senator John Cornyn. Trump’s last-minute endorsement of Paxton has injected new energy into the race, as the president’s endorsement power has been proven to sway recent primaries in favor of his chosen candidates. Despite Trump praising Cornyn as a “good man,” he believes the senator has not been supportive enough in the past. Cornyn, however, has the backing of Senate Republicans and his colleagues, who fear that Paxton’s past controversies could jeopardize the Republican stronghold in Texas.

The Texas Senate primary runoff has become the most expensive race in history, with millions of dollars being spent by both candidates and outside groups. The high stakes and intense competition have made this race a focal point for political observers across the country.

In addition to the Senate race, several member-on-member matchups and contentious House races are also on the ballot. The Houston-area 18th Congressional District, which has seen several elections in the last two years due to the deaths of previous representatives, is once again up for grabs. Rep. Christian Menefee faces off against Rep. Al Green in a closely watched contest.

Meanwhile, in the 33rd Congressional District, Rep. Julie Johnson and Former Rep. Colin Allred are locked in a Democratic primary battle. The 35th Congressional District features competitive runoffs on both the Republican and Democratic sides, with candidates vying for the opportunity to represent a district that has been redrawn to favor Republicans.

One candidate, Maureen Galindo, has stirred controversy with her campaign’s social media posts, leading top Democrats to condemn her comments. Despite facing backlash, Galindo has received financial support from a newly created Super PAC called “Lead Left.” Democrats have called on Republican leaders to denounce Galindo and her controversial remarks.

As voters cast their ballots in Texas, the outcome of these races will have far-reaching implications for the state and the nation. The results will not only determine the future of key political figures but also shape the direction of policy and governance in Texas for years to come.
