New York corrections officer was on duty when his teenage kids were killed in house fire
A devastating tragedy struck a New York corrections officer, Gregory Toone, as a fire engulfed his Westchester County home in the early hours of Wednesday morning. Toone, who was on duty at the time, lost his two teenage children, Alina and Jeremiah, in the blaze. The heartbreaking incident unfolded when Toone’s wife, Yenny Disla-Toone, was rescued by an older teen from the downstairs of the house and desperately pleaded with firefighters to save her children trapped in the bedrooms.
Despite the valiant efforts of the firefighters, Alina, 17, and Jeremiah, 15, succumbed to the fire and passed away in the hospital. The fire, initially thought to be accidental, was later determined to have been caused by an overloaded power strip. The entire neighborhood and Westchester County officials were left stunned and devastated by the tragic loss.
Gregory Toone, a dedicated corrections officer with a decade of service, was described by Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins as one of the county’s most committed officers. The loss of his children was deemed an “unimaginable tragedy” by Jenkins, who expressed condolences on behalf of the county and the correctional community.
Westchester County District Attorney Susan Cacace labeled the fire as a “catastrophic incident” and emphasized that it was every parent’s worst nightmare. The community of Cortlandt Manor, where the Toone family resided, was in shock and grief over the devastating loss.
Alina and Jeremiah, both students at Putnam Valley High School and active members of the theater group, were remembered fondly by their peers and teachers. The school’s theater club paid tribute to the siblings, highlighting Alina’s radiant personality and Jeremiah’s humor and kindness. Stuffed toys and flowers were placed on the front steps of the Toone family home in memory of the beloved teenagers.
In a show of support, a fundraiser has raised over $190,000 to aid the Toone family in their time of need. The community has rallied around the grieving family, offering condolences and assistance as they navigate through this unimaginable tragedy. The loss of Alina and Jeremiah has left a void in the hearts of their loved ones, friends, and community members, who will forever cherish the memories of the vibrant siblings.
