California loses its Fortune 500 crown to Texas
Everything is bigger in Texas, especially when it comes to business. The Lone Star State has overtaken California in the number of Fortune 500 companies headquartered there, marking a significant shift in economic power.
According to the latest Fortune 500 list for 2026, Texas now boasts 57 Fortune 500 companies with a total revenue of approximately $2.8 trillion, edging out California’s 56 companies with $2.7 trillion in revenue.
California, once home to tech giants like Chevron, Tesla, and Oracle, has been facing challenges such as high taxes, stringent regulations, and a high cost of living, prompting a wave of corporate relocations to Texas. With no state income tax and a business-friendly environment, Texas has become an attractive destination for companies looking to thrive.
The trend of companies and billionaires relocating to Texas is evident, with prominent figures like Uber co-founder Travis Kalanick making the move to escape potential tax burdens in California. Other tech leaders have also shifted their operations to Texas, drawn by lower taxes and a more favorable business climate.
Several major companies have followed suit, moving their headquarters or key operations from California to cities like Dallas and Houston. The appeal of lower taxes, affordable housing, and reduced regulatory hurdles has been a driving force behind these relocations.
This shift in Fortune 500 company headquarters marks a notable reversal from just a year ago when California led with 58 companies compared to Texas’ 54. The changing landscape underscores the impact of economic policies on business decisions.
Critics of California’s policies argue that high taxes, housing shortages, and excessive regulations are driving away businesses and talent. Supporters, however, maintain that California remains a hub of innovation with unparalleled resources and capabilities.
As Texas capitalizes on California’s economic challenges and stringent business environment, the West Coast may see more billionaires and corporations seeking refuge in the South. This shift could potentially alter the economic landscape that has long defined California.
