’60 Minutes’ correspondents met to discuss futures after Scott Pelley firing: report

The Future of “60 Minutes” Uncertain Following Firing of Scott Pelley

After the recent firing of Scott Pelley, the remaining correspondents at “60 Minutes” – Bill Whitaker, Lesley Stahl, and Jon Wertheim – met to discuss their futures amidst growing turmoil at CBS News. Former star Steve Kroft warned that the iconic newsmagazine may no longer exist in its traditional form.

The meeting took place following Pelley’s ouster and a sweeping shakeup at CBS News orchestrated by editor-in-chief Bari Weiss. There are speculations that Whitaker and Stahl could be the next high-profile departures from the program.

Stahl, 84, has been with “60 Minutes” since 1991, while Whitaker, 74, joined in 2014. Wertheim, 56, is the youngest of the trio and joined in 2017 after establishing himself as a leading sports journalist.

Kroft, who retired in 2019 after decades as a correspondent on “60 Minutes,” expressed concerns about the show’s future, stating that the recent firings have significantly altered its DNA. He questioned whether the program will be able to maintain its identity when it returns in the fall.

The turmoil at CBS News escalated after Pelley’s firing, with accusations of “falsehoods and bias” from Pelley, “censorship” from Vega, and concerns about editorial independence from Alfonsi. CBS News has denied these allegations.

The uncertainty surrounding “60 Minutes” raises questions about its future direction and the impact of the recent changes on the long-standing program.
