Cockroach Kingpin Busted With 100K Illegal Insects

Authorities in Australia made a significant seizure of over 100,000 live cockroaches that are illegal to keep in the country. The confiscated Madagascar hissing cockroaches and dubia cockroaches, valued at 200,000 Australian dollars, were taken from a commercial breeder in Bathurst, New South Wales. These exotic invertebrates are not allowed to be imported, kept, bred, or sold in Australia.

The Madagascar hissing cockroach, known for its large size of 2 to 3 inches, is much bigger than the common Australian cockroach. These cockroaches were likely intended for use as reptile food due to their size, which reduces the number of insects required. Authorities advised pet owners to opt for crickets or wood roaches as alternative food sources for their reptiles.

Australia maintains strict biosecurity controls at its borders to safeguard its agriculture, horticulture, and native wildlife from pest threats. Importing undeclared or illegal animal, insect, or plant material can result in hefty fines. Exotic cockroaches pose a risk of spreading diseases and harming native wildlife, leading to potential prosecutions for those found in possession of these invertebrates.

The breeder in Bathurst did not face charges, but the confiscated cockroaches will be euthanized as per the department’s statement. It is crucial to adhere to biosecurity regulations to prevent the introduction of harmful species into the environment.
