‘Lockdown’: Massive perimeter to ring Madison Square Garden as Trump goes to NBA Finals
President Donald Trump is set to attend Game 3 of the NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs at Madison Square Garden on Monday night, prompting the New York Police Department and the Secret Service to implement strict security measures.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch announced that Madison Square Garden will be put on “lockdown” for the event. A security perimeter will be established around the arena, with streets and avenues around the venue blocked off starting at 4 p.m. ET. Only individuals with tickets to the game, train tickets, business inside the area, credentials, or other authorized reasons will be allowed inside the secured zone.
To ensure smooth entry through security checkpoints, ticketed fans are advised to arrive at least two hours before the 8:30 p.m. ET tipoff. Backpacks will not be allowed inside the secured area unless individuals are heading to nearby Pennsylvania Station to catch a train.
In light of President Trump’s attendance, a fan watch party outside Madison Square Garden has been canceled for Monday night. However, other watch parties are scheduled, including one hosted by New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani at Bryant Park.
The heightened security measures come as the NYPD warns of a “heightened risk” for malicious actors targeting high-profile sporting events like the NBA Finals. The NYPD assessment highlights the potential for targeted violence or disruption during such events.
Despite the celebratory atmosphere, the NYPD issued a warning following Game 2 of the Finals, where multiple arrests were made and a police officer was injured due to disorderly conduct by some fans. The incident led to arrests for assault, individuals climbing light poles, and other disruptive behavior.
NYPD Commissioner Tisch emphasized a zero-tolerance policy for violence, destruction of property, or any chaotic behavior during this week’s games in New York. Fans are urged to maintain decorum and respect security protocols to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all attendees.
