Some Senate Dems still won’t commit to Graham Platner

Democrats continue to grapple with the aftermath of Graham Platner’s decisive victory in Maine’s Democratic Senate primary. While many party leaders and progressives have rallied behind Platner, a small but vocal faction of Capitol Hill Democrats remain cautious about his candidacy in the face of recent scandals.

Platner’s win in the primary seemed to put to rest any serious discussions about replacing him as the party’s nominee, with campaign arms signaling their support for him after the race was called. Progressives have been quick to celebrate his victory and urge party unity behind the Maine nominee.

However, some Democratic senators have stopped short of endorsing Platner when asked by POLITICO. Senators like Mark Kelly, Catherine Cortez Masto, Tammy Duckworth, John Fetterman, and Peter Welch have expressed reservations about Platner’s past and its potential impact on the general election against Senator Susan Collins.

Kelly, a potential 2028 contender, emphasized the importance of defeating Collins but stopped short of endorsing Platner, citing the need for Platner to address his scandals. Cortez Masto and Duckworth also refrained from endorsing Platner, focusing on other competitive races. Fetterman, a critic of his own party, flat out stated he would not endorse Platner.

Even Senator Peter Welch, who vowed to support all Democratic Senate nominees, acknowledged that Platner still has work to do in addressing his scandals and winning over voters.

Platner’s candidacy has generated significant grassroots support in Maine, despite not having the backing of the Democratic establishment. His rise as a political newcomer challenging the party’s status quo has resonated with voters who believe the party needs to return to its working-class roots.

Platner has faced several controversies, including allegations from ex-girlfriends of toxic behavior, inappropriate sexual messages, offensive comments on Reddit, and having a tattoo resembling a Nazi symbol. He has attributed his past behavior to struggles with post-traumatic stress disorder after leaving the military.

In his victory speech, Platner acknowledged his past mistakes and emphasized his commitment to growth and self-improvement. Supporters like Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders have called on Democrats to rally behind Platner, citing his accountability for his actions.

As Democrats navigate the complexities of Platner’s candidacy, the party’s ability to defeat Collins and regain control of the Senate hangs in the balance. Continued division within the party could play into Republican attacks on Platner and bolster Collins’ reelection prospects. The coming months will determine whether Democrats can unify behind Platner and mount a successful challenge to Collins in November. After a surprising victory in the Maine Democratic primary, candidate Platner is facing scrutiny over his past controversies. Despite initial skepticism from fellow Democrats about his viability in the general election, many are now resigned to his staying in the race.

One senior Democratic Senate aide, speaking anonymously, acknowledged Platner’s strong showing in the primary but cautioned that more revelations could reignite concerns. Supporters of Platner are not defending his past conduct, indicating that he must address these issues fully and move forward if he hopes to succeed in the upcoming election.

Another Senate Democratic aide echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that while Platner may have weathered the initial storm, the coming weeks will be crucial in determining the direction of the campaign. The focus may shift from personal conduct to Susan Collins’ alignment with a GOP agenda that is perceived as harmful to Mainers.

Republicans have wasted no time in targeting Platner’s controversies, with the National Republican Senatorial Committee and a pro-Collins super PAC launching ads that highlight his past Reddit comments. In response, Platner’s first general election ad took aim at the “Epstein class” without mentioning his opponent, Collins.

Despite the ongoing scrutiny, some Democrats like Sen. Elissa Slotkin of Michigan remain committed to supporting the candidate chosen by Maine voters. Slotkin emphasized the importance of electing candidates who will provide a check and balance on the current president, highlighting the need for a change in leadership.

As the campaign progresses, Platner will need to address his past scandals and present a clear vision for the future of Maine. With the support of Democratic colleagues and voters alike, he has the opportunity to prove himself as a viable candidate in the general election.

Overall, the race for the Maine Senate seat promises to be a closely watched contest, with both candidates vying for the support of voters and navigating the challenges of a highly polarized political landscape. Only time will tell how Platner’s past controversies will impact his chances in November.
