Man convicted of Red Line murder that started with a stolen Pepsi
Security Guard Convicted of Murdering CTA Passenger Over Pepsi
A shocking crime unfolded on the Red Line of Chicago’s CTA when a security guard, Isaac Anderson, was convicted of murdering a passenger in a senseless act over a can of Pepsi. The incident, which occurred on October 15, 2022, left the victim, Oral Woods, dead and Anderson facing a sentence of 48 years to life.
According to prosecutors, the chilling murder was captured on CTA surveillance footage. Anderson, using his Ventra card, entered the State-Lake station and boarded a southbound train. Woods, a 60-year-old man, entered the same car a few minutes later. After a brief interaction, Anderson stole Woods’ Pepsi from his backpack and then proceeded to throw the rest of the soda on him before fatally shooting him.
Despite Woods being unarmed and showing no threat, Anderson pulled out a revolver and shot him five times before fleeing the scene. Chicago police officers were able to track down Anderson, who had purchased multiple guns prior to the incident, through a description provided by witnesses and CTA surveillance footage.
Anderson, who had no prior criminal history, had been working as a security guard at various events, including Lollapalooza. The conviction of Anderson was praised by Cook County State’s Attorney Eileen O’Neill Burke, who commended the prosecutors and law enforcement for ensuring justice for Woods and his family.
The tragic incident serves as a reminder of the importance of safety on public transit and the consequences of senseless acts of violence. The victim’s family and loved ones have been left devastated by the loss, while the community grapples with the aftermath of this heinous crime.
