Bill Maher Confronted Wanda Sykes About Golden Globes Diss
Wanda Sykes recently revealed that Bill Maher confronted her after she made a joke about him at the Golden Globes in January. While presenting the award for best performance in stand-up comedy, Sykes joked about being a queer Black woman doing the job of two mediocre white guys, before roasting the nominees, including Maher.
During the ceremony, Sykes took a dig at Maher by saying, “Bill Maher, you give us so much, but I would love a little less. Just try less.” Maher was seen on camera with a slight smile, unsure of how to react to the joke. After the Golden Globes, Maher approached Sykes as they were waiting for their cars and questioned her about the bit.
In an interview with Vulture’s “Good One” podcast, Sykes shared that Maher confronted her, stating that the joke wasn’t funny. Sykes defended her joke, telling Maher that she heard laughter and it was clearly a joke. She imitated Maher as he continued to argue with her, prompting Sykes to point out that he was embodying the essence of the joke by engaging in the argument.
Maher reportedly mentioned receiving texts about the joke being stupid, to which Sykes responded by saying she received texts praising the joke and criticizing him. The conversation escalated when Maher asked Sykes to be on his podcast, to which she firmly declined.
The exchange between Sykes and Maher shed light on the dynamics of comedy and how jokes can sometimes hit a nerve. Despite their disagreement, Sykes stood by her joke and refused to back down from her comedic style. The incident serves as a reminder of the power of humor and the impact it can have on individuals, even leading to tense confrontations between comedians.
