Cruise tipping charges are ‘out of control,’ say passengers as companies tout ‘exceptional service’
Cruise Passengers Face Rising Charges After Booking
Cruise passengers are experiencing an all-too-familiar scenario: the bill that continues to grow after they’ve made their booking.
Automatic add-ons like daily gratuities, drink-package service charges, and specialty dining fees are causing frustration among travelers who feel misled by the initial price they were quoted.
Several cruise lines, including Holland America Line and MSC Cruises, have recently increased their gratuity or service charges, much to the dismay of passengers.
Holland America Line, for example, has introduced a daily “crew appreciation” charge of $18 for non-suite stateroom guests and $20 for suites, effective June 1.
Similarly, MSC Cruises has raised its daily hotel service charge by $1 per person per night for standard staterooms on select sailings.
Carnival Cruise Line has also followed suit by increasing its gratuities and service charges earlier this year.
While automatic gratuities have been a common practice in the cruise industry, passengers are increasingly voicing their displeasure with the additional charges.
On social media platforms like Reddit and Facebook, travelers are calling for more transparency in pricing and questioning the need for excessive gratuities.
The ongoing debate surrounding tipping culture has highlighted the divide between passengers who prefer all-inclusive pricing and those who believe in rewarding exceptional service with additional gratuities.
