Wicker Park man accused of killing kittens, buying look-alike replacements faces jury trial Monday

Thomas Martel, a Wicker Park man, is facing charges for the gruesome killing of at least six kittens and replacing them with look-alikes bought off Craigslist to deceive his mother. The case has been ongoing for almost three years and is now heading to a jury trial set to begin on Monday.

Martel, represented by attorney Brandon Brown Jr., appeared via Zoom for a status hearing where Brown requested a continuance citing the need for rest and preparation after concluding another trial. However, Judge Sharon Kanter denied the request, pointing out the extensive history of the case with numerous hearings, motions, and evidentiary rulings.

Throughout the proceedings, observers believe that Martel and his attorney have deliberately prolonged the case. Some have reported Martel’s taunting behavior, including smiling at them after winning previous delays.

The disturbing allegations against Martel surfaced in July 2023 when prosecutors revealed that he had confessed to enjoying killing cats, a behavior that he claimed dated back to his childhood. His girlfriend became alarmed after receiving a video showing Martel disposing of a kitten in Lake Michigan. Subsequently, Martel purchased new kittens, naming them Shelly and Reggie, only to meet a tragic fate at his hands.

After a series of kitten replacements and disturbing incidents involving drowning and microwaving the animals, Martel’s girlfriend eventually discovered graphic photos and videos on his phone, leading her to contact the authorities. Subsequent investigations uncovered the remains of multiple kittens in Martel’s apartment, prompting his voluntary surrender to face charges.

The case has garnered attention for its heinous nature and prolonged legal proceedings. As it heads to trial, the community awaits justice for the innocent kittens who fell victim to Martel’s cruel actions. Stay tuned for updates on this harrowing case as it unfolds in the courtroom.
