Residents return to war-ravaged southern Lebanon with hope and sorrow after the US-Iran deal
TYRE, Lebanon — Adnan Kaour revisited his home in the coastal city of Tyre, Lebanon, just a week after Israel issued evacuation warnings to its residents.
The warnings were followed by airstrikes targeting the Lebanese Hezbollah militant group.
Upon his return, Kaour found his dream family apartment in ruins, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.
His visit coincided with the announcement of an agreement between the United States and Iran to end the war in the Middle East, including Lebanon.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Israel’s military presence in southern Lebanon will continue based on security needs.
The ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah remains tenuous, with fears of renewed conflict.
Despite hopes for peace, the reality of destruction and displacement lingers in crisis-battered Lebanon.
Associated Press journalists Fadi Tawil in Beirut and Melanie Lidman in Tel Aviv, Israel, contributed to this report. Hussein reported from Ain Ebel, Lebanon.
