LA Mayor Karen Bass Declares Emergency As Boyle Heights Warehouse Fire Spreads Smoke Across Region

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass declared a state of emergency on Saturday to ensure that the city receives the necessary resources to combat a significant warehouse fire that has engulfed large portions of the city in smoke.

Mayor Bass stated in a press release that both the city and county have established spaces to assist families seeking relief from the smoke, and that efforts are ongoing around the clock to fully extinguish the fire.

The fire, which originated at a privately owned cold-storage warehouse in Boyle Heights, began on Wednesday, prompting precautionary measures in the area due to potential air contamination. Residents were advised to seal all openings, turn off ventilation systems, and relocate to an interior room with their loved ones and pets.

Los Angeles Fire Department Chief Jaime Moore disclosed in a press conference that the hazardous materials aspect of the fire has been addressed, with efforts now focused on addressing biohazard challenges.

Chief Moore explained, “We are faced with 85 million pounds of frozen food within the facility, and due to poor visibility, it is challenging for our firefighters to navigate the premises and address the situation effectively.”

The mayor’s declaration seeks assistance under the California Disaster Assistance Act and urges the state to expedite access to resources and relief programs.

Mayor Bass emphasized that the primary concern is the health and safety of those affected by the fire, and steps are being taken to remove toxic materials from the vicinity to prevent a substantial environmental crisis.

“Our focus is on prevention and safeguarding public health,” Mayor Bass affirmed.
