Cait Conley Wins New York Democratic Primary To Challenge Mike Lawler
WASHINGTON — The Democratic primary for New York’s 17th congressional district has declared Cait Conley as the winner, despite interference from the Republican party.
Conley is set to go head-to-head with Rep. Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.) in the upcoming November election, a crucial matchup for Democratic prospects of reclaiming control of the House of Representatives.
Lawler, one of the few Republicans representing districts that favored Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election, viewed Conley, an Army veteran and former national security official, as his strongest potential opponent in the general election.
A group affiliated with House Republicans launched attack ads targeting Conley’s stance on immigration, while Lawler himself has sought to boost one of Conley’s opponents.
“It is a very clear signal that he knows we’re going to build a coalition and beat him in November,” Conley told JS.
Joining Conley in the primary race were Beth Davidson, a county legislator and Conley’s closest competitor in polls, along with John Cappello, Effie Phillips-Staley, and Mike Sacks.
Lawler, known for his moderate Republican views, has at times opposed the party’s agenda in Congress. Last year, he threatened to vote against a key tax bill unless it significantly increased a deduction for state and local taxes. Party leaders compromised with a modest increase, and Lawler ultimately voted in favor of the bill.
Conley highlighted her military background, including 16 years of active duty service, some in combat zones, and her deep family ties to the district, as strengths for the general election.
“My service will be a significant factor in this district, where 20% of registered voters are unaffiliated or independent,” Conley stated. “In New York 17, over 50% of households have connections to active duty service members, veterans, first responders, or law enforcement.”
