UN nuclear agency boss says inspectors will visit Iran’s nuclear sites

TOKYO — The director of the International Atomic Energy Agency indicated on Wednesday that inspectors will soon visit Iranian nuclear enrichment sites as part of the interim agreement between the United States and Iran aimed at ending the conflict.

The statement by IAEA head Rafael Mariano Grossi represents the strongest confirmation yet from the agency regarding access to crucial Iranian nuclear facilities.

Despite previous obstacles preventing inspections following a conflict between Israel and Iran in 2025, the IAEA is now poised to examine sites where Iran allegedly stores highly enriched uranium.

The agreement between the US and Iran has raised questions about the timing of these inspections and the subsequent downblending of Iran’s uranium stockpile.

Grossi emphasized the importance of IAEA supervision in overseeing nuclear activities in Iran, with inspections being a critical component of the process.

The recent agreement between the US and Iran, which involves diluting enriched uranium stockpiles and lifting certain sanctions, faces challenges amid renewed tensions in the region.

While the specifics of the inspections remain to be seen, the IAEA’s role in verifying Iran’s nuclear activities is crucial for maintaining stability and security in the region.
