Annecy Colombian Entry ‘Once in a Body’ Explores Human Ties
Colombian animator María Cristina Pérez is making a name for herself in the animation world with her experimental short film “Once in a Body” (“Una vez en un Cuerpo”). This marks her fourth short film, dedicated to her sister, exploring themes of human connection and intimacy.
Using traditional 2D animation with oil on paper, the 10-minute drama follows a heavy-set woman as she floats and morphs on screen, narrating a traumatic experience shared with her sister. The story delves into themes of loss, feminine fragility, and the complexities of the human body.
Pérez’s directorial statement reflects on the mind-body connection and the persistence of feelings amidst internal dissonance. She is currently working on her first animated feature film, “My Dad the Truck,” set to premiere in 2028. The film explores the fractured relationship between a father and daughter as they rebuild their bond on a journey from the countryside to the city.
Reflecting on her experience at the Annecy Animation Festival, Pérez highlights the rewarding nature of the event and the opportunity to connect with the Latin American animation community. She also praises the growth of Colombia’s animation industry, noting the emergence of bold storytelling and experimental approaches in short films.
Despite the industry’s progress, Pérez acknowledges the challenges of financing animated productions in Colombia. While funding programs exist, they may not fully support the time and resources required for animation projects, leading filmmakers to compromise on creative decisions.
“Once in a Body” is produced by Pez Dorado Animaciones in collaboration with Cartuna. The Annecy Animation Festival, where the film competed for the Audience Award, took place from June 21-27.
Overall, María Cristina Pérez’s work exemplifies the talent and creativity emerging from Colombia’s animation scene, showcasing a unique and sensitive approach to storytelling that will continue to strengthen the country’s presence on the international stage.
