18-year-old with 11 pending juvenile cases robbed a Subway while on electronic monitoring, prosecutors say

Jeremiah Tatum Dawson, an 18-year-old Chicago man with a history of juvenile offenses, found himself in trouble once again last month. Despite being on electronic monitoring and having eleven open juvenile cases, Dawson allegedly committed an aggravated robbery at a Subway restaurant on the Near West Side.

The incident took place on May 31 at the Subway located at 1651 West Roosevelt Road. Dawson, wearing a camouflage sweatshirt and a facemask, entered the restaurant and threatened the cashier, claiming he had a gun and demanding money. He proceeded to jump over the counter, grab the cash register containing approximately $450, and flee on foot. The entire robbery was captured on video, and Dawson’s escape was recorded by a nearby Chicago Police Department surveillance camera.

Fortunately, Dawson’s criminal activities were no secret to local law enforcement. A sergeant who recognized him from previous arrests immediately knew where to find him. When officers arrived at Dawson’s residence, they discovered him sitting on the front steps, still wearing the same camouflage sweatshirt seen in the surveillance footage. The cashier positively identified him as the perpetrator.

In addition to the Subway robbery, Dawson is also facing charges for stealing the cash drawer from a Walgreens in Old Town on March 14. His lengthy criminal record includes multiple thefts, robberies, and other offenses, resulting in various juvenile convictions. Despite his young age, Dawson has already been sentenced to three years of juvenile detention for a particularly serious offense.

Given Dawson’s history and the nature of his latest crime, the state requested that he be detained. Judge Ankur Srivastava granted this request, ensuring that Dawson remains in custody pending further legal proceedings.
