Plea for households to read energy meter as prices rise
Bill Payers Urged to Submit Meter Readings as Energy Prices Rise
As household energy prices are set to rise by 13% for millions of people in England, Scotland, and Wales on Wednesday, bill payers are being urged to take action. The price cap set by regulator Ofgem will impact many tariffs, and those without smart meters should submit a meter reading to avoid being charged at the new, higher rate based on estimated usage.
While the price increases may have a limited impact during the summer months due to lower energy consumption, the rising cost of gas is expected to continue affecting energy prices into the winter. Analysts at Cornwall Insight predict a slight 0.5% decrease in Ofgem’s price cap in October, putting pressure on the government to provide assistance to those struggling to pay their bills.
Earlier reforms aimed at reducing energy bills have been implemented, with Chancellor Rachel Reeves hinting at additional targeted support in the autumn. However, the outcome of the US-Israeli war with Iran has led to uncertainty in energy markets, with prices not rising as dramatically as initially feared.
Craig Lowrey, principal consultant at Cornwall Insight, emphasized the temporary nature of the current market stability following the Iran ceasefire. He highlighted the importance of the final agreement and its impact on energy prices, noting that the effects of the conflict will continue to be felt for some time.
