Sony to stop making physical discs for PlayStation starting in 2028
Sony to Go Fully Digital for PlayStation Consoles by 2028
Sony has announced that it will be discontinuing physical discs for its PlayStation video game consoles and transitioning to a fully digital format starting in January 2028, as stated by the consumer electronics company on their official blog on Wednesday.
Once physical disc production ceases, new games will only be available in digital format through the PlayStation Store, an online platform for purchasing PlayStation games, as well as at select retailers. It’s important to note that this change will not impact games that have already been released on disc or those set to launch before the designated cut-off date in January 2028, according to Sony.
In a statement, Sony expressed that this shift towards full digital distribution aligns with current consumer preferences, as the demand for digital media surpasses that of physical discs. The company stated, “This transition will enable us to align more closely with how most of our community prefers to access and play games today.”
Founded in 1946 in Japan as Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo K.K, Sony has been a pioneer in the technology industry. The company introduced the first PlayStation console in 1994, featuring a CD-ROM drive. Over the years, Sony has launched multiple generations of PlayStation consoles, with the PlayStation 5 being the latest model in their lineup.
