Questions grow about why ICE arrested a Texas nun

The recent arrest of Sister Leticia Ugboaja by ICE agents has sparked a wave of questions and concerns within the community. The incident occurred as Sister Ugboaja was on her way to attend mass at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in McAllen, Texas. The Catholic Diocese of Brownsville, where Sister Ugboaja is a member, has expressed shock and disbelief at her detainment.

Sister Ugboaja, a Nigerian national, has been a registered nurse at South Texas Health System and a certified nursing assistant at a health center in Edinburg, Texas for the past 10 years. She is also a volunteer minister at Our Lady of Sorrows Church and a member of the Daughters of Mary Mother of Mercy congregation. Following her detention, Sister Ugboaja was released the same day with the help of Rep. Monica De La Cruz, who worked with DHS to expedite the process.

The Catholic Diocese of Brownsville has issued a statement expressing their ongoing efforts to gather more information about the circumstances surrounding Sister Ugboaja’s arrest. Despite multiple requests for comment, the Department of Homeland Security has remained silent on the matter.

Democratic Rep. Henry Cuellar has raised concerns about the use of immigration enforcement resources in cases like Sister Ugboaja’s. The diocese has thanked local representatives for their support and Bishop Daniel E. Flores has condemned the arrest, calling for a reevaluation of Homeland Security enforcement protocols.

Bishop Flores emphasized the need for reform in light of Sister Ugboaja’s peaceful detainment while on her way to church. The incident has raised serious questions about the treatment of individuals within the community and the need for a more compassionate and just approach to immigration enforcement.

As the community continues to seek answers and justice for Sister Ugboaja, it is clear that her arrest has shed light on the need for reform and greater accountability within the immigration enforcement system.
