River North shooting was a ‘gang-on-gang targeted hit,’ alderman says

In the early hours of Wednesday morning, a disturbing display of violence unfolded on the corner of State and Grand in River North. Five gunmen, masked and armed with rifles and pistols, unleashed a hail of bullets at their target—a 30-year-old man with a history of gang involvement and criminal activity.

According to Alderman Brendan Reilly, this was not a random act of violence but a targeted “hit” between rival gangs. The victim, a multi-time convicted felon with a record of gun possession and suspected involvement in a murder, was fatally shot in the attack. Another man, a 65-year-old homeless individual who frequents the neighborhood, was struck in the foot by a stray bullet meant for the primary target.

Surveillance footage captured the chilling scene as the gunmen arrived in a matte gray Honda Accord and opened fire without hesitation. Dozens of shots rang out, leaving shell casings scattered across the plaza outside an office building. The suspects quickly fled the scene in the stolen vehicle, which was later found burned on the West side.

In response to this brazen act of violence, Alderman Reilly has called for increased police presence in downtown Chicago, particularly as the city gears up for the July 4th weekend. Commander Bielfeldt of the 18th District has assured residents that law enforcement will be out in force to ensure the safety of the community during the holiday festivities.

While the targeted individual had a history of criminal activity and gang affiliations, the senseless violence that erupted on the streets of River North is a stark reminder of the need for vigilance and proactive policing measures.
