Olympian David Hearn indicted for alleged vandalism of Reflecting Pool

David Hearn, a three-time U.S. Olympian, has found himself in hot water after being indicted in Washington, D.C., for allegedly causing malicious damage to the lining of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. The indictment, issued by the Superior Court of the District of Columbia, charges Hearn with destruction of property worth $1,000 or more, a felony offense that carries a potential sentence of up to 10 years in prison.

U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, Jeanine Pirro, made the announcement at a press conference, emphasizing that Hearn will be held accountable for his actions. According to Pirro, the incident took place on June 19, 2026, when Hearn reportedly ripped a piece of sealant from the bottom of the reflecting pool at the Lincoln Memorial. She stated that the evidence clearly shows Hearn’s willful destruction of property at the iconic site.

Pirro alleged that Hearn forcefully and violently pulled up the pool’s liner, damaging approximately two square feet of sealant in the process. Despite being confronted by a National Parks Service employee and instructed to stop, Hearn allegedly continued his destructive actions and even shouted at the employee in a rude manner. It was further claimed that Hearn did not use any weapons during the incident, relying solely on his hands to cause damage to the pool.

In his defense, Hearn stated that he was merely a curious and concerned citizen who touched a piece of blue coating that was already detached from the pool’s bottom. He denied any intentional destruction or harm to the pool, insisting that he did not remove, damage, rip, tear, break, or destroy any part of it. However, the indictment stands against him, with Pirro asserting that the evidence supports the charge of property destruction.

In response to the indictment, Hearn’s attorneys condemned the charges as outrageous and politically motivated. Norm Eisen, co-founder and executive chair of Democracy Defenders Fund, along with Mary Dohrmann, senior counsel at Washington Litigation Group, criticized the administration’s handling of the case, calling it a misuse of government power against an ordinary citizen.

The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool has been facing maintenance issues, including algae growth and peeling paint, following a $16 million renovation completed during the Trump administration. President Donald Trump had previously attributed the problems to vandals, including one who allegedly made a 300-foot gash in the pool using a box cutter or knife. When questioned about the president’s claims, Pirro maintained that intentional damage had indeed occurred, but declined to provide further details until the investigation progresses.

As the legal proceedings unfold, the fate of David Hearn and the implications of his alleged actions at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool remain uncertain. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving national landmarks and holding individuals accountable for any damage inflicted upon them.
