Man who got 1 year in CTA ‘busjacking’ incident now gets 3 years for mugging Red Line passenger (He’s already out)
Maurice Lowry Pleads Guilty to Red Line Robbery
Maurice Lowry, known for a previous incident involving a CTA bus, has now pleaded guilty to robbing a man on the Red Line. Despite his criminal history, Lowry will not be facing time in prison due to the state’s 50% sentence reduction law and credits earned during his time in jail.
In December 2021, Lowry allegedly forced a CTA bus driver at gunpoint to take him to a specific location off-route. He then proceeded to order two passengers off the bus before instructing the driver to continue to his desired destination. However, he later stopped at a gas station, where surveillance footage captured him hiding a gun on the shelves of the store.
Although initially facing charges of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, Lowry was ultimately sentenced to one year in prison for illegal firearm possession. In May 2024, he was involved in a robbery on the Red Line, where he and an accomplice stole from a sleeping passenger. The victim confronted them, leading to a physical altercation where Lowry allegedly kicked and struck the victim.
After evading authorities for six months, Lowry was eventually arrested by CPD transit officers at the State-Lake station. He has since pleaded guilty to robbery and received a three-year sentence from Judge Tyria Walton. With credit for time served, Lowry will not have to serve additional time behind bars.
Lowry’s criminal activities have garnered attention in the past, but with his recent guilty plea and sentence, it remains to be seen if he will turn his life around or continue down a path of crime.
