Mara Brock Akil’s Writers’ Colony Sets Summer and Fall Cohorts
Mara Brock Akil’s Writers’ Colony Reveals New Cohorts for 2026
Showrunner Mara Brock Akil’s Writers’ Colony has recently announced the introduction of two new cohorts for 2026. The summer session commenced on June 10, while the fall session is set to begin on September 2.
Located in the vibrant West Adams neighborhood of Los Angeles, the three-month screenwriting residency is situated next to Brock Akil’s story27 Productions company. During the program, each selected writer will have the opportunity to workshop scripts and engage in discussions with industry professionals in preparation for their careers in the entertainment industry.
Each cohort comprises four emerging writers who will participate in workshops, establish career-focused connections, and pitch ideas to their peers. Mara Brock Akil, currently involved in shepherding the Netflix series “Forever,” boasts an impressive resume in television and film, including the renowned series “Girlfriends,” “The Game,” and “Being Mary Jane.”
The summer cohort features a diverse group of individuals, including Nicole Schwegman, a former U.S. Navy Commander and White House press official who recently served as a showrunner assistant on “Watson” (CBS); Spencer Jamison, a filmmaker and 2026 Film Independent Episodic Lab Fellow; Nagee Brown, a writer and producer; and Justin Casselle, an award-winning writer-director.
On the other hand, the fall cohort consists of Charlie T. Savage, a Navy veteran and filmmaker; Malia Dawkins Jennings, a writer who contributed to “Iyanu: Child of Wonder” Season 2; Leland Hall, a filmmaker and former HBO executive; and Shay Ball, a former finance professional.
Mara Brock Akil, the founder of the Writers’ Colony, emphasized the importance of supporting the next generation of storytellers. She stated, “When writers are provided with the space and support to enhance their craft, remarkable things unfold. Witnessing each cohort evolve in their storytelling abilities and find their place in the industry is the driving force behind everything we do.”
Notable members of previous Writers’ Colony cohorts include Duran Jones, Dorado Quick, Shahari Moore, and Sunny Dae. The 2026 spring cohort featured Jordan Rock, Domonic Diaz-Smith, Porscha Williams, and Corinthian Maldonado.
The Writers’ Colony continues to nurture and empower emerging writers, providing them with the tools and resources needed to succeed in the competitive entertainment industry. The program serves as a valuable platform for aspiring storytellers to refine their skills, build connections, and ultimately make their mark in the world of television and film.
