Stocks Near Record Highs While Bond Yields Hit Two-Decade Peak

U.S. markets are opening with a striking split on Tuesday, October 6: stock futures are rising while long-term Treasury yields sit near their highest levels in decades. The S&P 500 is hovering near an all-time high after the Nasdaq’s record session, supported by enthusiasm around artificial intelligence, strong technology shares, and several buyout announcements.

At the same time, the 10-year Treasury yield is near 5.32%, while the 30-year yield is around 5.68%. Levels not seen since 2002. Investors are demanding more compensation for inflation risks, large federal deficits, and the possibility that borrowing costs may remain elevated.

That creates an unusual market backdrop. Higher bond yields can pressure stock valuations because future corporate earnings become less attractive when safer investments offer greater income. Yet investors are currently giving more weight to expected AI-driven growth, corporate profits, and deal activity.

The Treasury is also doubling the size of some debt buyback operations, a move intended to improve trading conditions for older, less-liquid government bonds. The program is designed to support market functioning, not erase the nation’s debt, and regular Treasury auctions remain in place. For households, higher yields may eventually create better opportunities for savers, but they can also raise borrowing costs for mortgages, auto loans, credit cards, and business financing. Investors should avoid reacting to one market session, review their time horizon, and keep diversification in mind.
